The Swedish Match 40 was created by the legendary Swedish designer Pelle Petterson,
who designed and helmed the Sweden´s “Sveridge”, challenger for America´s Cup in
1977 and 1980.
Petterson´s brief was to create a boat easily commissioned and decommissioned in
order to be transportable in a 40 feet container. It should also be capable to achieve
spectacular performances.
The SM’ 40 has a striking resemblance to an America´s Cup Class, it is slab-sided,
narrow and has a large sail plan. The cockpit is wide open and runs nearly half
the length of the boat. Besides the halyards, many control lines are also led to
the pit area.
This fleet consists of six identical boats which have periodic maintenance. It requires
a crew of five in men’s races, or six in women´s races.
